About Allerford
Allerford is a small National Trust Village with many picturesque houses nestling in Porlock Vale between Selworthy Beacon and Exmoor. You can enjoy tranquil walks in Allerford Woods where there are many paths to follow; all are sign posted, it would be difficult to get lost. Alternatively you could walk to Bossington Bay which is about a mile and half away from the Cottage The beach is rural with huge waves crashing onto an open swathe of pebbled beach, you will need suitable foot wear for this walk, whilst not arduous it can be slippery underfoot.
We do not have our own public house in Allerford but can offer the Reading Room, which is a privately run licensed establishment open to our guests. Here you can enjoy a game of skittles, darts, snooker or pool. There will always be some entertaining local gossip going on and you will be assured a most warm welcome. The bonus is that you can walk as it is 30 yards from the Cottage.
We have a village store with post office and cash point facilities, which in the high season has a delightful tea garden. It also offers a full range of groceries and local produce.
Other attractions in the Village include the much photographed and famous packhorse bridge over the River Aller and the last standing thatched Victorian school which is now a museum of rural antiquity. A short distance down the lane is the Falconry and Riding Centre. The nearest public house and restaurant, of which there are many, are situated in Porlock (well known for its hill) which is a mile away, you may walk if you feel energetic but it takes less than 3 minutes in the car. There is ample parking in Porlock with a good range of shops, pubs and restaurants. Again you will enjoy excellent walking from Porlock Village to Porlock Weir and if you are feeling very fit the walk from Porlock Weir to Culbone Church is simply divine. See more pictures on Local Interest page, together with useful links to other sites of interest.
